the blues

so we got to a point where we didn’t know
what was write and what was wrong
so instead we built a wall
albeit metaphorical
and we woke to a day where we couldn’t tell
what was heaven and what was hell
and with no more hopes to sell
you smiled and said ‘it’s just as well’
for the first time in a very long time
I was out of words to speak
I just wished the scenic route
could’ve done that job for me
and you’d sing

you’d sing the blues to me
just like in the old days
before real life crept in
and I clang to those days
when we were young and free
and you’d sing the blues to me
you’d sing…

we were born in a town that’s known to frown
on its sons’ and daughters’ fame
and the jokes are always old
and the people just the same
the one failure that’s mine
as much as yours
though I’m really not too sure
is we let the outer world tarnish our own home
how I wish…

and we woke to a day where we couldn’t tell
what was heaven and what was hell
and with no more dreams to sell
you smiled and said ‘it’s just as well’
how I wish…
