I often sought to shift some of the blame
when the plain truth could be explained
with what people call chance
what people call fate
but people don’t know parts of this tale
I’ve long made my peace with leaving these shores
and having to miss the comforts of home
the one thing that burns
the question I ask
will I ever return to witness this dusk?
will you ever show me one like tonight’s?
will I ever make this place mine for life?
will I wake up every morning to your light?
I’m neither too old
nor remotely too young
the longer this lasts
the longer I’m gone
the harder to part
that’s the hardest part
when the mind and the heart are so far apart
I’ll stand right here, atop this hill
just by myself
to hear if still the seas’ applause would come to mine
and suggest I’m doing fine
