we’d always have tomorrow

my cigarettes, your broken heart
the solitude from being apart
the sorrow that you’ll carry into tomorrow
and no regrets with ways that part
no apologies for who we are
each other’s lines and lies, mutually borrowed

and I can’t even tell whose words
would come out of whose mouths
but I recall we’d always have tomorrow
tomorrow can be comforting
or punish you with joy
when it plays with your face and its furrows

and I was always adamant
and you so fucking hesitant
with all the pros and cons
I ignored and you extolled for weeks
I got to thinking anyone with looks as good as yours
would prove an easier ride
a better fit
